New research indicates that people who come off new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.
Published data in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Individuals purchasing such drugs must be informed of the danger of rapid weight regain when the treatment concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery suggests a return to original weight in about one and a half years.
The research, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with other pills.
Scientists note that people who shed pounds through dieting typically experience a more gradual creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Experts believe the way of the drugs explains the amplified weight return.
These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Withdrawal of this medication leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals contend that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Users who have come off the medication report a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced a switch flipping and you become starving," described an individual.
This challenge is compounded if users have not established lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Recent estimates show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.
Finally, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and long-term success likely depends on ongoing behavioural support.
