A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major public works projects.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” affirmed the national leader.
The president announced that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency finished the year before. This rail line was intimately linked to his leadership's economic goals for the southeastern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.
The development of both train projects was supervised by the army, marking a notable growth of its responsibilities in public projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked rate, defying expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had also raised significant questions over safety standards.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an immediate halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This halt was suggested until the completion of a thorough technical review. The party stated that the situation "demands immediate answers."
In response, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in complete adherence to all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these strategic projects.
